CLOCK is a core gene of the body's internal 24-hour clock. A common variant has been studied for whether people lean 'morning' or 'evening', though the evidence is weak and your schedule, light exposure and age matter far more.

What CLOCK does

CLOCK is one of the core genes of the circadian clock, the roughly 24-hour feedback loop running in nearly every cell that sets the timing of sleep, hormone release, body temperature and metabolism. Its role is not in dispute: disabling it in mice disrupts circadian rhythm outright.

This variant sits in the untranslated tail of the gene rather than in its coding sequence, and it has been studied since the 1990s as a candidate for morningness and eveningness in humans.

Why a core clock gene explains so little about your chronotype

Being an early or late riser is substantially heritable, with twin studies suggesting something around half, but it is highly polygenic. A genome-wide study of nearly 700,000 people identified more than 350 loci associated with morning preference, and no single one of them, including CLOCK, carries much of the signal.

What actually sets when you sleep

Light is the dominant input, and modern life scrambles it: too little bright light in the morning and too much light in the evening both push the clock later. Age shifts chronotype substantially, with a well-documented drift toward lateness through adolescence, peaking around twenty, and back toward earliness afterward.

Work and school schedules, caffeine, alcohol and screen habits do the rest. If you want to shift your clock, morning daylight and consistent wake times are the tools with real evidence, and they work regardless of genotype.

Where chronotype does matter

The mismatch between an internal clock and an imposed schedule, sometimes called social jetlag, is associated with poorer sleep, mood and metabolic measures. That is a real and useful concept, and it depends on your actual sleep timing, which you can observe, rather than on a variant that explains almost none of it.

What each rs1801260 genotype means

rs1801260 has three possible genotypes: AA, AG and GG.

Leans morning (CLOCK) (rs1801260 AA). You have two copies of the more common CLOCK version, weakly associated with a slightly more 'morning' leaning in some studies. The effect is small and disputed, and your actual sleep timing depends far more on habits, light and age.

Mixed (CLOCK) (rs1801260 AG). You carry one copy of the CLOCK variant studied for evening preference, an in-between result. This gene's link to being a morning or evening person is weak, so don't read much into it.

Leans evening (CLOCK) (rs1801260 GG). You have two copies of the CLOCK variant loosely linked to 'eveningness' (later sleep) in some studies. The evidence is weak and the effect small, so treat it as trivia: light exposure, schedule and age shape your body clock far more.
